How to setup a GTFS feed in Data Vision Software

  • Control System: DVS Data Vision Software

Steps

Note: Data Vision Software must be installed first because GTFS has services that rely on Data Vision Software.  You must install both with manual icons for this setup.

  1. Install Data Vision Software
  2. Install GTFS
  3. Go to: "C:\Program Files\Daktronics\DVS\GTFS\conf" and open the gtfs (not gtfs properties) file in a notepad editor, or notepad ++
  4. Fill out:
    1. Feed name: (can be anything)
    2. Feed url: (supplied by customer or engineering)
    3. Real time trip updates url: (optional. Supplied by customer or engineering)
  5. Save the edited gtfs.properies file.
  6. Launch the Data Vision Software service and then the GTFS service.  (Don't run the GUI yet)
  7. Watch the GTFS service window.  You should see it begin to download the schedule from the specified feed.  This could take up to 20 minutes depending on how big the schedule is. See example below

  8.  Once you see the Data Vision Software MicroWebServer start, launch the Data Vision Software GUI.
  9. Go to the Data Vision Software control panel and select the GTFS icon
  10. Enter the stop ID and select save. NOTE: If you have multiple signs that require multiple stop IDs, you can enter them in a comma separated list.  If you know that the sign will only display arrival or departure information, a [A] or [D] should be added to the end of the stop ID.  A list of all available sites and stop IDs within  in C:\Program Files\Daktronics\DVS\GTFS\feeds\stops.txt file(The feed name you specified in step 3).
  11. Create all necessary display if this hasn't been done already.
  12. Select Data Service Settings from the Control Panel.
  13. Select the newly created GTFS schema.
  14. Highlight the schema instance on the right and select Attach Display(s) to this schema.
  15. Select the display that will be using this Stop ID and select apply. Note: A list of all displays and  their stop IDs can be found in the stop.txt file from step 7.
  16. Repeat for any other instances.
  17. Create a new message using the blank message template.
  18. Add a vertical box that covers the full sign
  19. Within the vertical box, add a single horizontal row
  20. Within the horizontal row add the necessary amount of fields that would appear in a single line on the sign.  Keep in mind the size of the information that will be display in that field when sizing them.
  21. Click on each filed.  Select the "..." option.
  22. In the Set Variables window, select GTFS and then Service 1.  Pick what information you want displayed in that field.  Repeat for each field you created in step 17.
  23. Once you have the first row of information how you want it, the remaining rows can be auto generated.  Select the Box level.
  24. Select Automatically generate content from existing content.  (Blue gear)
  25. In the by: field, enter how many rows of information will appear on the sign.
  26. In the Substitute Variable field enter : "service{1}"
  27. Select Generate.
  28. You should see the remaining fields auto generate.
  29. Save and play the message.
