How do I set the network adapter (NIC) priority in Windows 10?

  • How do I utilize a simultaneous connection to a non-Daktronics network on a second NIC on a Daktronics computer?

Steps

Prior to Windows 10, if you needed to adjust the network adapter (NIC) priority, you could utilize the "Adapters and Bindings" options in the Advanced Settings in Network Connections:

In Windows 10, the "Adapters and Bindings" options are no longer available:

You need to set the interface metric manually via the Network Settings options in Windows.
  1. Click the Windows icon on the taskbar.

  1. Type ncpa.cpl and select ncpa.cpl Control Panel item.

  1. Right-click on the adapter you want to set the priority on and select Properties.

  1. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties. Note: if using IPv6 for connection highlight that instead.

  1. Select Advanced on the next window.

  1. At the bottom of the next window uncheck the Automatic metric box (A) and enter a number of 2 or higher in the Interface metric: box (B). The high this number is the lower in the priority list it will be. Note: for data communication on Daktronics networks you will want the priority of this NIC to be higher (lower number) than the other NICs being used on the computer. Click OK (C) on all previous windows.

  1. Repeat this process with other NICs that you want to set priority on. Remember to make the Interface metric: number higher to set it at a lower priority than the Daktronics network.
