Web Page Playback: How should I size content?

Topic

  • How should I size content for web page (website) playback?
  • Can I adjust what section of the website or webpage is being displayed?
  • Why do I see scroll bars on my display?
  • Why is text is being cut off on my display?

Environment

  • Product: DMP-8000 version 7.7 or later with Windows 7 OS or later
  • Component:
  • Control System: Show Control System, Display Studio

Steps

Single display:

If the HTML content is for a single display, then it can be made for that specific sign or zone size.

  • Incorrectly made content could result in visual issues on the display.  This could include scroll bars or images/text being cut off.
  • The DMP does not scale/squish HTML content like it would treat a regular image.
  • It is best practice to make content to the proper size as you cannot tell the player which section of website/webpage to play or show.

Multiple displays:

If creating for multiple displays and display sizes, use responsive design or viewport to work across the multiple displays.

  • Responsive design has portrait and landscape options.
    • The content auto "formats" based upon the size and orientation of the display.
    • The content could scale, rotate, re-arrange, or be all together different based on size of zone/display it's playing in.
  • Viewport:
    • The viewport element gives the browser instructions on how to handle the webpage's dimensions and scaling: Desktop computer vs Mobile device.
    • This tells us how the DMP-8000/Zone tells the HTML content what size it is.

If needed, extra parameters can be added to the URI file to zoom into the webpage.

  1. Open the URI file containing the URL.
  2. Add in the command line ?zoom=&x=&y=
  3. After the =, type in the zoom times (this will zoom into the webpage starting in the top left corner), the x and y (will be negative) start coordinates
    1. e.g. ?zoom=1.1&x=-170&y=-120
    2. Your complete URI with zoom added should look like this example
