How to update firmware on a VFC controller?

Question

  • How to update firmware using a memory stick (flash drive, thumb drive) and the VFC controller?
  • How can I update firmware remotely using a computer through the webpage user interface (Web UI)?
  • How can I update firmware locally using a computer through the webpage user interface (Web UI)?

Environment

  • Product Family: Transportation
  • Product: 
  • Component: VF, VM, VX, VC6, VS6, VT6 displays
  • Control System: VFC DMP-50xx controller 

 Answer/Steps

  • The VFC controller has 2 boards inside of it. The DMP (Player image) & the VIP (Video Processor). Update both.
  • You will need to download the firmware. (click link below for firmware location)
    1. Select Transportation > Firmware > VFC-DMP505x
      1. Select vip-distro_2019.10.16-b2330_armel_main.deb) and save the file
      2. Select Latest VFC and save dmp.offline_8.40.0.76_amd64.deb
      3. Select dispfw_2020.1.29-4666e61ec.deb and save the file
  • There are two methods on how to upload firmware listed below.

Method 1: Updating remotely through the webpage interface page.

DMP:

  1. Open an internet browser to log into the DMP board of the VFC controller.
  2. Type the controllers IP address followed by :80 into the address bar. Example http://10.3.20.75:80
  3. You will be prompted to enter the password in the popup window.
  4. Select Firmware from the Dashboard.
  5. Select Update and browse to the DMP file example: dmp.offline_x.x.x.x_i386.deb.
  6. Click on the open button.
  7. Wait for it to finish 100%.

 VIP:

  1. Open an internet browser to log into the VIP board of the VFC controller.
  2. Type the controllers IP address followed by :85 into the address bar. Example http://10.3.20.75:85
  3. You will be prompted to enter the password in the popup window.
  4. Select Firmware from the Dashboard.
  5. Select Update and browse to the VIP file example: vip-distro_xxxx.xx.xx-xxxxx.deb.
  6. Click on the open button.
  7. Wait for it to finish 100%.

Disp FW Package:

  1. Open an internet browser to log into the VIP board of the VFC controller.
  2. Type the controllers IP address followed by :85 into the address bar. Example http://10.3.20.75:85
  3. You will be prompted to enter the password in the popup window.
  4. Select Firmware from the Dashboard.
  5. Select Update and browse to the dispfw xxx.x.xx-xxxxxxxx.deb file.
  6. Click on the Open button. Wait for it to finish 100%.

Method 2: Updating locally with a USB memory stick.
  1. Download the firmware to your USB memory stick.
  2. Insert the memory stick into J3 on the back of the VFC. (Kingston brand is preferred. other brands might not work)
  3. Log into the VFC by pressing enter on the keypad.
  4. Enter the password and press enter again.

To update the DMP do the following from the controllers menu screen:

  1. Select Shared
  2. Select Update
  3. Select VFC
  4. Select dmp.offline_x.x.x.x_i386.deb
  5. Select Confirm
  6. Wait for it to finish 100%

To update the Video Processor do the following from the controllers menu screen:

  1. Select Shared
  2. Select Update
  3. Select Display
  4. Select  vip-distro_xxx.xx.xxxxxxx.deb
  5. Select Confirm
  6. Wait for it to finish 100%

To update the Display Firmware Package do the following from the controllers menu screen:

  1. Select Shared.
  2. Select Update.
  3. Select Display.
  4. Select dispfw xxx.x.xx-xxxxxxxx.deb
  5. Select Confirm.
