Scoreboard: My Wireless Scoreboard has Skipping, Blanking or Lagging

Topic

  • My Wireless Scoreboard has Skipping, Blanking or Delays.

Environment

  • Product: Scoreboard
  • Component: Wireless Radios
  • Control System:

Steps

These behaviors are typically due to low signal strength or interference from excessive use of wireless devices in the area. Follow the guidelines below to ensure optimal operating conditions of the radio system:

  • Verify an antenna is connected to both the console and the scoreboard, pointing straight up, and showing no signs of damage or deformity. If an antenna is damaged, click here  to order a replacement.
  • Ensure there is no more than 500' (152 m) indoor and 1500' (457 m) outdoor between the console and the scoreboard. At the same time, ensure the minimum separation between a console antenna and scoreboard antenna is greater than 20' (6.1 m).
  • Ensure there is direct line-of-sight between the radio antennas. Obstacles that may interfere with radio waves:
    • Is the All Sport console antenna below the window sill?  If so, have them raise it above the window sill and re-test.
    • Chain link fence
    • Concrete or metal structures
    • Tinted & "Low-E" Glass*
    • Weather, such as fog and rain
    • Trees & poles
    • Crowds (standing in front of console)

      * Energy-efficient glass windows can significantly reduce effective signal range.

  • If more than one console is being used in the facility, they will never be set to the same BCAST and CHAN numbers at once.
  • Keep wireless All Sport consoles at least 20' (6.1 m) apart.
  • Verify Wi-Fi hotspots and cellular repeaters are kept an adequate distance between both the console and the scoreboard.  If interference from one of these sources is suspected, turn the interference source off and re-test.
  • Try changing the scoreboard receiver settings following How do I change wireless scoreboard radio receiver settings? , and then ensure the console matches the new radio receiver settings following How do I determine my scoreboard’s All Sport radio settings? .
