IMPORTANT: These are NOT valid directions to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 used for Venus 1500 v4.18 or later and Vanguard v4.9 or later. DD2474426 How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Manually for Venus 1500 v4 or Vanguard v4 (This does not apply for Show Control Display Studio)

Two possible scenarios needing to manually install the SQL Server 2005 could be:

  • If the SA password needs to be changed to conform to different rules or policies.
  • If the user account needs to be changed from NETWORK_SERVICE to LOCAL_SYSTEM.
  • NOTE: This procedure must be completed before installing Venus 1500 v4, Vanguard v4, or Display Studio.

  1. Download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition from here: SQL Server 2005
  2. Select Language, click Download.
  3. Download SQLEXPR.EXE or SQLEXPR32.EXE - The installer will start extracting files.
    • The SQLEXPR includes both 64-bit and 32-bit SQL Express. The SQLEXPR32.EXE should only be used on 32-bit systems.
  4. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
  5. The installer may prompt you about prerequisites. Click Install, then click Next.
  6. The installer will scan the computer's configuration to prepare for the installation.
  7. The Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard will start, click Next to begin.
  8. The system configuration check should pass allowing you to move forward. Click Next. (If you get an ASP.Net error when installing on Windows 7 OS ignore and continue with install.)
  9.  This part of the wizard should prompt you with registration information. Enter Name, and Company, and uncheck Hide advanced configuration options.
  10. Ensure Database Services does not contain a red X then click Next.
  11. Select Named instance and type Nucleus.
  12. Select Use the built-in System account and select Network service or Local system from the drop down, depending on how you want the server configured. Venus 1500 v4 installs using the Network Service account. (Local System is the preferred installation. If the installation does not work then uninstall SQL Server 2005 and begin again, choosing Network Service.)
    • Note: For Display Studio, select SQL Server and SQL Browser in the Start services at the end of setup section.
  13. Select Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication). Enter SA logon credentials.
    • Venus 1500 v4 and Vanguard install can use any password the customer chooses and the customer should remember for possible future use, or use SQLServer2005 for a default.
    • Display Studio install needs a specific password to install, contact a Daktronics Technician for the password.
    • Some sites will have password requirements and will need their IT department to select the password. If this is the case you will receive the following error:
  14.  Use default Collation Settings and click Next.
  15. Ensure Enable User Instances is checked, and Add user to the SQL Server Administrator role is unchecked.
  16. Use default Error and Usage Report settings, click Next.
  17. Click Install.
  18. Click Finish.
  19. Remember to apply the SP4 update you downloaded in Step 1.

  7. Click Service.
