Galaxy: How do I configure a computer on a network to communicate with a display without changing the signs IP address?

Potential Symptoms

  • How do I configure a computer on a network to communicate with a display without changing the signs IP address?

  • How do I connect / tunnel to a display through a network to change its IP address?

Environment

  • Product: Galaxy
  • Components: Ethernet
  • Control System:

Resolution

  1. Check if the display is connected to the same router/network as the computer that will be controlling the sign.
  2. If the display and computer are connected to the same router/network, then it is possible to setup a network tunnel.
    1. Open the network connections (shortcut - type "ncpa.cpl" in Windows Start menu search) and double click on the active local area connection.
    2. Depending on the operating system you will either have a status tab (WinXp) or a Details tab (Vista, Win7) or a General tab (Win 10).
    3. Click the tab and copy the information that the network connection on the computer that will be controlling the sign is currently assigned to onto a note pad or equivalent note source.
      • Make sure to copy the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and Both DNS servers.
  3. Once you have the above information click on the connection "properties".
    1. Double Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and change the connection type to "Use the Following IP address"
    2. Enter in the IP address, subnet mask and gateway and DNS information etc. that was obtained in the above steps.
    3. Next, click on the Advanced tab and click Add.
  4. At this point enter the IP address 172.16.192.20 and the Subnet Mask of 255.255.0.0 (Factory default IP address for displays is 172.16.192.25)
  5. Or enter an address within range of display's current IP/Subnet, if different from default settings
    • Note: The subnet mask should be the same between the computer and the display.
  6. If IP address of sign is unknown, see: Venus 1500: How do I determine what IP address to use for display configuration.
  7. Click OK on each window to save the settings until the original Network connection page is up and the local area connection is connected.
Note if a Bomgar session is open on the computer the connection will be lost temporarily while the connection with the router is re-established.

Open a Command Prompt and attempt to ping the default display IP address: 172.16.192.25 (Or display's custom IP if different than default IP).

  1. If the ping succeeds, then attempt to connect to the display using V1500.  If you can connect with V1500 you are finished.
  2. If the ping fails and you cannot connect with the display using V1500 then refer to Galaxy: How do I change a static IP address on a display? for changing the IP address on the display.
