How to update firmware on Shure QLX-D wireless equipment.

Environment

  • Shure QLX-D wireless
  • Wireless microphone, Referee beltpack, Radio receiver

Steps

Note:  QLX-D 2.X firmware versions are not compatible with 1.X firmware versions. 

Equipment preparation-

  1. Download the Shure Update Utility from http://www.shure.com/americas/products/software/utilities/shure-update-utility.
  2. Connect the computer and receiver to the same network.  *IP for receiver and computer must be on same network scheme.  Typically 192.168.1.x or 192.168.4.x
    • To manually set the IP to static on the receiver use the following process:
      1. Press MENU while holding ENTER to access Advanced Menu.
      2. Press the MENU button to navigate to the IP menu.
      3. Use the arrow buttons to set the mode to St (static) and press ENTER.
      4. Use the arrow buttons to edit the first group.  Press ENTER to save and continue to the next group.
      5. Use the arrow buttons and ENTER button to edit the remaining 3 groups. 
      6. When group 4 has been edited, the display will show the subnet mask menu.  Use the arrow buttons to scroll and select a preset value for each of the subnet mask groups.
        IP and subnet will be displayed as follows on the receiver:

      7. When finished, press ENTER to save settings.
    • To digitally set the IP to static on the receiver use the following process:
      1. Download Wireless Workbench 6 from http://www.shure.com/americas/products/software/wireless-workbench/wireless-workbench-6.
      2. Right click on device and click Properties... in WWB6.
      3. In the Properties window click Network Tab.

      4. Click Settings > Arrow to expand Settings to see Utilities and Network Tabs.
      5. Set the networking mode to Manual.
      6. Enter valid numbers in the IP and Subnet fields.
      7. When finished, select Apply.
      8. Click Close.

 Firmware upload-

  1. Updating the receiver.  ***CAUTION!!! Ensure that the receiver power and network connections are maintained during a firmware update.  Do not turn off the receiver until the update is complete.
    1. Connect the receiver and computer to the same network.
    2. Open the Shure Update Utility.
    3. Click on the Firmware tab to find available updates.  If nothing showing, click the top middle button might say "xxx updates available" or "Check for Updates..." button where xxx is a number.
    4. Download Manager window will appear.
    5. Click Download button.
    6. If updates do not pull in use the Import button if manually importing firmware files.  Contact Audio Engineering for firmware files.
    7. Click the Update Devices tab and check the Version to install box next to each device.

    8. Click Send Updates to load the firmware to the networked devices.
      Display on the receiver will show the following (numbers on left may appear different): (May not see till half way through progress bar)

    9. When the download is complete, the receiver will reboot with the update firmware installed.
  2. Updating the transmitter.  When firmware is downloaded to the receiver, it includes firmware updates for the transmitter.  Updated firmware is passed from the receiver to the transmitter using the IR Sync port.
    1. On Receiver press MENU while holding the ENTER button to access the advanced menu. 
    2. Use the MENU button to navigate to the update menu.
    3. Press ENTER to start the update.
    4. When the red IR LED flashes, align the receiver and transmitter IR sync ports.  The red LED will remain illuminated to indicate correct alignment and the download will automatically start.
    5. Can have the transmitter and receivers IR sync ports up to 6 inches away.

    6. Maintain alignment during the update and monitor download progress (0 to 100%) on the receiver screen.  ***Do not break the IR sync between the receiver and transmitter during updates.
      See image below (section showing 37 will count up).

    7. When the update is complete, "TX Update Good" is shown on the receiver display.

    8. Verify update was successful by testing mic.
