Database Engine Service failed to install during manual SQL 2014 installation.
Potential Symptoms
- Getting Error 945 Severity Level 16 Message Text Database '%.*ls' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files when starting SQL service.
- Error exit code - 2061893607 : "Could not find the Database Engine startup handle."
- Error exit code - 2061893606.
- Receive error "SQLCMD returned error code 1."
- Error: " Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes " when installing SQL 2014 manually.

Cause
- The default account for Database Engine service is in an error state and cannot be used/accessed during installation of SQL 2014.
Resolution
Manually install SQL 2014 following: How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Manually for Venus 1500 v4.22 or Vanguard v4., DD3302758. For Server Configuration (step 11) specify "NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE" instead of "NT Service\MSSQL$NUCLEUS " (steps listed below).
Note - Prior to running the installation be sure to uninstall SQL 2014. Follow: How to remove/uninstall SQL 2005, 2008 or 2014., DD3522855
- Choose NT Service\MSSQL$NUCLEUS account.
- Scroll down to select <<Browse...>>
- Select Advanced.
- Select Find Now and select LOCAL SERVICE from the list.
- Click OK and then OK again.
- Continue with installation.
