Minnesota State University Moorhead Embraces Social Media at Commencement with the Help of Daktronics Equipment
BROOKINGS, S.D. – July 15, 2014 – Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) in Moorhead, Minnesota, empowered graduates and their families to share their experiences with social media at their recent commencement ceremony, and they used the Show Control System installed by Daktronics Inc. (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, S.D., to help make it happen. The event resulted in a nationally trending hashtag, 2,500 tweets reaching 386,000 people and creating nearly 1.5 million impressions.
"Daktronics and their Show Control software made it possible for us to create the most entertaining and engaging ceremonies we've ever had," said Jonathan Wepking, assistant athletic director for marketing and production at MSUM. "The ability to incorporate the social media within the venue really added value to the whole ceremony and resulted in the success of the nationally trending hashtag. We couldn't be happier with the results, especially at a time when many other universities are banning social media from their graduation events. It was terrific for our athletic department to provide value to what we feel is the most important university event on campus. We embraced it and have received more than enough positive reinforcement to know we made the right call."
Show Control was used as a character generator to animate tweets over live video on the displays inside the arena where commencement took place. This allowed the event to have specific tweets shown on the display at the operators command and avoided a constant scrolling of tweets that might dominate the ceremony.
Operators were able to monitor the twitter feed, select specific tweets to type into Show Control's content studio software, click save and then send the tweet to the display as an overlay, all in less than 10 seconds. Show Control allowed operators to decide when to show tweets and when to take them off the displays, resulting in timing tweets from family members targeted to the specific person crossing the stage at that moment.
The video feed from the in-arena displays was streamed online for people all over the world to see. It resulted in tweets coming in from multiple locations including places such as Dubai. The mass appeal and sharing the hashtag via internet streaming led to the national trending hashtag on Twitter and a successful social media experience at the MSUM commencement.
