Boston College Bolsters Football Experience at Alumni Stadium with Daktronics Display System

Display features 13HD pixel layout, only technology of its kind in the ACC

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Nov. 14, 2014 – When Boston College (BC) Eagles fans returned to Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, they experienced a new atmosphere as Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT) of Brookings, South Dakota, manufactured and installed a new LED video display system. Eight displays, a custom scoreboard and four game clocks were installed and operational for the first game of the season. This 13HD installation is a showcase venue for Daktronics; the first of its kind in the northeast region of the United States.

"As BC prepared for the upcoming season, we framed our game experience against our living rooms. The new boards symbolically and literally represent our commitment to beating the living room experience," noted Boston College Director of Athletics Bradley Bates. "We must provide a very affordable experience that appeals to a diversity of demographics."

Boston College is now one of 10 colleges in the nation to install technology with a 13HD pixel layout, the same technology being used in professional stadiums across the country. Two main end zone displays, one installed on each end of the field, measure approximately 19 feet high by 54 feet wide. The displays are capable of showing live video and instant replays, and they can also be divided into separate windows to show statistics, graphics, animations, sponsor messages and game information.

"Another great thing about the new boards is creating a connection between fans, students and coaches," added Bates. "They can also do a close up on the players so you can see their faces even though they're wearing helmets. You can see their personalities."

Four upper end zone ribbon displays, two installed on each end of the field, measure approximately 3.5 feet high by 107 feet wide. Two more ribbon displays were installed along the fascia on the east and west sides of the field, each measuring 3.5 feet high. The east side measures 360 feet long and the west side measures nearly 280 feet long. All ribbon displays feature 15HD pixel layouts and provide additional statistics, game information and sponsor advertisement opportunities.

Approximately 855,000 LEDs forming 258,000 pixels per end zone display provide Eagles fans with an improved game-day experience. That's a total of 97 individual 60-inch TVs to make up one video display. The ribbon displays, when put end to end, are long enough to circle the entire football field.

The technology used for these displays incorporates multiple levels of protection form the outdoor elements while featuring excellent image clarity and contrast with wide angle visibility to provide a pristine picture fans throughout the stadium.

"We're excited to provide this new system to Boston College, featuring technology that is first of its kind in the Northeast," said Dave D'Amico, Daktronics regional sales. "Boston College is now among a select group of elite stadiums, bringing an incredible game-day experience to fans and players alike."

Two fixed-digit scoreboards measuring 3.5 feet high by 42 feet wide and four delay of game clocks measuring 3 feet high by 4 feet wide were also installed in Alumni Stadium. The scoreboards, installed on the lower end zone fascia, provide standard football statistics such as score, time remaining, timeouts left, and down and distance information.

To help control and integrate all displays throughout Alumni Stadium, Daktronics also installed its powerful Show Control system. This industry-leading system provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a user-friendly production solution. At another location on campus, Conte Forum, Daktronics will be installing four LED scorer's table displays to light up the sidelines with statistics, graphics and animations, sponsor messages, and other game information. These displays will each measure 2 feet high by more than 9 feet wide and feature 10 millimeter line spacing. They can be joined together and combined in any configuration to meet the needs of Boston College basketball.

Daktronics LED video and messaging display technology offers a long lifetime with minimal maintenance and low power consumption, providing value and excitement for years to come.
