Understanding Broadcast and Channel Settings for Radio All Sport Consoles

Question

  • How do I change the Broadcast and Channel settings on my Radio All Sport Console?
Symptoms being experienced:
  • My scoreboard is blank, and I'm unable to control it with my console.
  • I can control one scoreboard but not the second.
  • I can control both scoreboards, but I cannot control them individually.
  • My scoreboard goes through a Power-On Self-Test (POST) but then goes blank.
  • I have verified that the antennas are tight on the console and scoreboard, and I have direct line of sight between them, but my scoreboard is still blank.

Environment

  • A radio-equipped All Sport 1600, 3000, 5000, or 5500 console (has an antenna on the back)
  • Radio-controlled scoreboards, shot clocks, or Delay of Game (DOG) clocks

Answers/Steps

  1. With the All Sport console off, cycle power to the scoreboard (turn power off to the scoreboard for ~30-60 seconds by flipping the breaker/disconnect, or unplugging the scoreboard from its outlet - indoor only). For outdoor scoreboards, there should be a local disconnect at the base of the support structure for the scoreboard.
  2. When returning power to the scoreboard(s), verify a POST (Power-On Self-Test) boot-up sequence appears.

    • P# (Protocol Number): Typically "P0" to indicate no TOD (time of day) protocol plug is installed; otherwise it may show a different protocol setting.
    • AD ## (Address Number): Note that "D" is actually a zero. Just check that some numbers do appear. To verify the correct address number(s) for your scoreboard model, you will likely need to contact tech support; otherwise it could be verified in the appropriate All Sport manual: All Sport 5500, All Sport 5000, All Sport 3000, All Sport 1600.
    • b# C# (Broadcast and Channel settings): If these settings do not appear, the scoreboard may not be receiving a signal from the radio receiver due to a faulty connection or receiver unit. In a few instances, the settings may not appear if the scoreboard does not have a traditional clock or Home and Guest score digits.

  3. Take note of the Broadcast and Channel settings from the previous step. These values will be used in adjusting the All Sport console radio settings.
  4. Turn the All Sport Console on and press the <CLEAR/NO> button (do not resume the previous game).

  5. Enter in the correct sport code (for example, 1101 for Basketball) using the number keys and then press <ENTER>.
For more information on sport codes, refer to What All Sport Code should I use for my scoreboard? (DD2257097).

  6. Press the <CLEAR/NO> button and enter in the broadcast and channel settings obtained in Step 2.
  7. Wait 5 seconds, and then see if you can now edit the information displayed on the scoreboard.

If the console radio settings match those displayed on the scoreboard during the POST, it may be necessary to change the Broadcast and Channel settings of the radio receiver inside the scoreboard. Refer to How to change Gen V Radio Receiver Settings (DD2122306).

Radio Broadcast and Channel Diagrams

By default, radio receivers, mounted inside the scoreboard behind the antenna, are set to Broadcast 1, Channel 1 (b1C1) when shipped. To change the Broadcast and Channel settings of the radio receiver, refer to How to change Gen V Radio Receiver Settings (DD2122306).

Below are several diagrams which help give a visual understanding of how the Broadcast and Channel settings work with multiple scoreboard systems.

  • B0C0 (Broadcast 0, Channel 0) is a master control setting. Any radio-equipped scoreboard in range of the All Sport console will listen to it.
  • B1C0 (Broadcast 1, Channel 0) is a master control setting for scoreboards with radio receivers set to Broadcast Group 1. Any radio-equipped scoreboard with Broadcast Group 1 in range of the All Sport console will listen to it, regardless of the Channel setting.
