Steps

How to enable XP_cmdshell feature for SQL Server 2005:

    1. Navigate to Windows Start Menu -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools and then click on "SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration."
    2. Select "Surface Area Configuration for Features."
    3. From the left panel, select "xp_cmdshell."
    4. Place a check next to "Enable xp_cmdshell."
    5. Click "Apply" and then "Ok."

How to enable XP_cmdshell feature for SQL Server 2008:

    1. Navigate to Windows Start Menu -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Management Studio 2008.

    2. Once access to SQL Server Management Studio 2008 is present, right click on "[COMPUTER NAME]\NUCLEUS" in the Object Explorer on the left panel and then click "Facets."
    3. In the View Facets window, click on the Facet drop down menu and select "Surface Area Configuration."
    4. Locate "XPCmdShellEnabled" and then click on the drop down menu to the right and select "True."
    5. Click "Ok" to accept changes.

How to enable XP_cmdshell feature for SQL Server 2014:

    1. Install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2014 if it is not already installed: How do I download and install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2014 for SQL Server 2014?
    2. Navigate to Windows Start Menu -> Microsoft SQL Server 2014 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Management Studio 2014.
    3. When the first prompt comes up, select "Connect" to establish a connection to the Nucleus service.
    4. Right click on "[COMPUTER NAME]\NUCLEUS" in the Object Explorer on the left panel and select "Facets."

    5. In the View Facets window, click on the "Facet:" drop down window and select "Surface Area Configuration."
    6. In the "Facet Properties:" section of the window, find "XPCmdShellEnabled," click on the drop down window to the right and select "True" from the list of options.
    7. Click "OK." XPCmdShell should now be enabled.
