Venus 1500: How do I confirm what Microsoft SQL Server is being used by version 4?

Topic

How do I confirm what Microsoft SQL Server is being used by Venus 1500 v4?

Environment

  • Venus 1500 v4.18
  • Both SQL Server 2005 and 2008 Installed

Steps

With the recent releases of Venus 1500 4.18, all brand new, first time installs of our software will have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 automatically installed. All Venus 1500 Versions 4.17 and lower and SCS 1.20 and lower being updated to 4.18 or 1.21 and newer will continue to use Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

Why it is important to know what SQL Server is being use? It is due to, when transferring databases, you CANNOT take a Database using SQL Server 2008 and bring it to a computer using SQL Server 2005, even if they are the same software versions. You CAN however take a database using SQL Server 2005 and bring it to a computer using SQL Server 2008. Computers can have both SQL Servers installed, it is just a matter of what server we are using and where our Database instance is stored. This is why it is important to always check before performing a database transfer or using SQL Server 2005/2008 troubleshooting articles.

  1. Launch Venus 1500 v4 (Any version)
  2. Click the Orange V Application Menu -> Help -> About.
  3. Click on the Nucleus Tab.
  4. Look at the Database (Microsoft SQL Server):
    • If it shows 9.XX.XXXX.XX, the computer is using SQL Server 2005.
      • DD2438050_1.jpg
    • If it shows 10.XX.XXXX.XX, the computer is using SQL Server 2008.

Unable to Launch Venus?

If you cannot launch your Venus 1500 v4 software to confirm, please use the following method.

  1. Go to the following location on the computer:
    •  Windows 32 Bit Systems:  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
    •  Windows 64 Bit Systems:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server
  • If you see only a folder called MSSQL.1 or any higher number, or multiple, the computer is using a SQL 2005 database.

  • If you see a folder called MSSQL10.NUCLEUS, the computer is using a SQL 2008 Database, even if there are other MSSQL.X Folders.
