Term Definition

Animation Graphic elements with motion to create a special effect. Common formats are .AVI, .MP4, and .MPG.

Complementary Color Colors directly across from each other on the color wheel. Common examples are red and green, orange and blue and yellow and violet.

Contrast The difference between color values in a layout of the animation. An example of high contrast is the use of black text on a yellow background. An example of low contrast is the use of red text on a green background.

Fixed-width fonts Characters using the same amount of physical space.

Gradation A smooth, gradual change from one color to another.

Graphic Pictoral representation of a message, picture or image, usually in .PNG, .JPG, .BMP, .TIF, and .GIF formats.

Leading Also called line spacing, this refers to the space between lines of text.

Raster An image composed of points that can vary in quality due to scaling. File examples include .JPG, .BMP, .PSD, and .TIF.

Resolution For photographs, image resolution is measured in DPI (dots per inch). The higher the DPI, the more clarity and detail an image will have. For example, a good image DPI for digital displays is 72. Common DPI for high resolution photos is 300.

Still Static graphic to use for those areas that prohibit moving content.

Serif A serif is the fine line finishing the main strokes of a letter. Typefaces either have serifs or don't (sans serif).

Vector An image composed of paths that maintains its quality when resized or scaled. Common formats are .EPS and .AI.
