The Challenge

Fitzpatrick International Group and Inmobiliaria Spectrum Group, a general contractor and owner of the Oakland Mall development in Guatemala City, Guatemala envisioned curved full-color LED video displays with sound to be strategically placed inside the Oakland Mall atrium. They wanted the displays to be viewable from two different mall levels, with the screen content displayed in synch with music to create an amazing visual and audio effect.

The Daktronics Solution

Daktronics and Spectrum met at the Mall at Millenia in Orlando, Florida, where Daktronics installed 12 curved displays in 2002. Spectrum was “sold on Daktronics as the provider of the best systems,” said Tatiana Mancilla, Manager of Properties & Development at Spectrum, after visiting the Mall at Millenia and other US installations. Although the original budget had no room for such an elaborate system, Spectrum placed an order for nine Daktronics 12 millimeter LED video displays each measuring approximately 4.5 meters by 1.8 meters, including Daktronics sound system.

Daktronics used the 2002 Mall at Millenia project as a foundation to create the displays for Oakland Mall, using the latest in engineering technologies. The displays were built to specifications and installed while the mall was still under construction.

Oakland Mall is a beautifully designed venue that houses over 150 stores on three levels, food courts, restaurants, an old-fashioned carousel and a waterfall cascading down over several levels. The atrium, with an illuminated Daktronics LED message center in the floor and nine Daktronics LED video displays mounted in a ring on stainless steel poles, has become the focal point, amazing and entertaining shoppers and tourists.
After an investment of $55 million, the spectacular Oakland Mall opening was on November 5, 2008. Spectrum’s president was in attendance for the ribbon cutting, followed by a fashion show and press conference.
