Daktronics Displays Prominent Part of Times Square Celebration

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dec. 29, 2009 – When people hear “New Year,” the first image that may appear in their heads is Times Square filled with a large crowd, waiting anxiously for the magic minute to arrive. Many of the glimmering displays located on One Times Square, the tower from which the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball drops, were manufactured by Daktronics Inc. (NASDAQ-DAKT).

Daktronics’ first Times Square installation was the well-known Dow Jones Zipper Display in 1986. Since that time, Daktronics has added more than 20 major installations to the world-famous area of New York City, more than any other LED display manufacturer. Some of the most famous Daktronics installations in Times Square include the Coca-Cola® display, the Anheuser-Busch sign, and the Samsung and Prudential displays.

Last year’s New Year’s Eve crowd was estimated at right around one million people, and this year’s crowd could be even bigger. For an entire century, Times Square has been the place to be for New Year’s Eve celebrations due to its array of ground-breaking technology. Since the first LED display in Times Square in the early 1990s, Times Square has maintained the status of the high-tech advertising capital of the world.
