California Speedway Brightens Scoring Pylon with LED Technology
BROOKINGS, S.D. - October 24, 2007 – California Speedway in San Bernardino County, Calif, will debut brighter scoring results in time for the February 2008 West Coast Premiere of NASCAR on its 146-foot four-sided scoring pylon. Daktronics Inc. of Brookings, S.D. (NASDAQ-DAKT) will design and manufacture the digits using light emitting diode (LED) technology to be retrofitted on the current pylon structure.
The Speedway will update from its incandescent system to reduce time and resources spent on maintenance. The red LED digits will show current race results in addition to the lap number in 18- and 30-inch digits. This will offer greater visibility to the racing fans throughout the track.
“From being the first fully wireless facility on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup circuit to integrating high-definition monitors throughout the track, California Speedway is committed to being a pioneer in the use of the latest technology available,” said Speedway President Gillian Zucker. “Daktronics was able to help us stay at the forefront by providing their expertise and helping us renovate our scoring pylon to make it the best and brightest we’ve ever had.”
Advantages of LED technology over incandescent bulbs include a reduction of power usage by approximately 90 percent and LEDs last approximately 15 times longer than incandescent bulbs. LEDs offer greater visibility and lower power and maintenance requirements when compared to incandescent bulbs and, since they are a solid state devices, they are much less susceptible to vibration damage.
The 2008 Auto Club 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is scheduled for Sunday, February 24.
